The Hot Beat

The second-day story, with your help. Call Gazette reporter Adam Belz at (319) 398-8273 or e-mail him:

News blogging goes wrong

KCJJ-AM in Coralville is reporting that a blogger for the Iowa City Press-Citizen has been charged with disorderly conduct for, among other things, blowing a high-pitched whistle to rile up neighborhood dogs.

She then complained about the barking dogs on her blog. Uh, and the blog is still running. She posted something today.

Adam, should the P-C remove her blog because she was charged with disorderly conduct? I’m confused by your second paragraph. She’s not employed by the Press-Citizen, she is only utilizing their software to maintain a blog as user-generated content.

Disorderly conduct = Take down the blog? I’m interested to know your thoughts on why that should affect her ability to participate in user-generated content.

I’m not condoning her actions, in the least! I think it’s hysterically funny that she tries to save a squirrel, but is charged with DC for trying to get dogs to stop barking. That’s classic.

I should have been more clear. She caused the dogs to start barking, and then complained about the barking on her blog. At least that’s how I read it. That’s “user-generated” content in the truest sense! A reporter would be crucified for such behavior.

But she is only a blogger using the newspaper’s software, I guess, so the newspaper is under no obligation to remove her blog.
