Mental health/disabilites funding crisis ahead

Craig Wood, Linn County’s Mental Health and Developmental Disability Services Director, projects a $2.3 million funding shortfall in fiscal year 2010.

Mental health funding was already suffering, then the flood, the economic crisis and the statewide 1.5 percent funding cut hit. Wood expects a 10 percent spike in the need for mental health services because of the floods, as families that lost jobs turn to the government to pay for help they were paying for on their own before.

“We have a major problem,” Wood said. “We had a problem just under so-called normal circumstances.”

He said 15 counties in Iowa are already out of money and are putting people on waiting lists instead of cutting services.
