Need your help

I’m writing a story about the long journey CDBG money takes from the desk of the president, where the bill is signed, to the pockets of the flood victims that need help.

If anyone has any ideas on how to frame this type of story, or any suggestions on things to consider as I report and write it, I’d appreciate the input.

My rough idea now is to get in touch with a business owner who’s waiting for CDBG money. According to Theresa Bornbach, who is administering the program for small businesses, flooded business owners should start getting money by Dec. 19, at the latest. So the timing is right.

The second half of the story is a detailed outline of how the money gets from the White House to southwest Cedar Rapids. I understand this process very dimly, but the basics of business assistance are that a lot of approvals are needed and the money flows from HUD to the state to the city to the Chamber to the guy with the shop that was flooded.

Any ideas? I’m at (319) 398-8273 or

Talk to the owner of Dostal’s Catering. I believe he received $50,000 and is already putting his money to use.

Try the folks at ECICOG (East Central Iowa Council Of Governments). I believe they have handled various CDBG funds in the past, non-flood related.
