Fitch Ratings is predicting some cities in America may not have a daily newspaper by 2010, Editor & Publisher reports.

Fitch considers the debt held by major newspaper companies Tribune and McClatchy to be junk debt.

Gannett, the company that owns the Register and Press-Citizen, has laid off at least 82 employees in Iowa as part of a 10 percent payroll cut announced in October.

The Gazette hasn’t laid off any newsroom employees yet, and there is no indication (yet) that it will, but time will tell.
